Swamp cooler mold: why evaporative coolers cause it

Evaporative "swamp" coolers add moisture by design, which makes them a common mold source in New Mexico homes. Here's how to spot it, prevent it, and when to test.

Swamp coolers keep Four Corners homes comfortable through the dry heat, but they cool by adding moisture to the air, and that same moisture is what mold needs to grow. If your home smells musty when the cooler runs, the cooler is a good place to start looking.

How a swamp cooler works (and why that invites mold)

An evaporative cooler pulls warm outside air through wet pads. The water evaporates, the air cools, and a blower pushes that cooler, more humid air into your home. It works beautifully in a dry climate. The catch is that the pads, the reservoir, and the ductwork all stay damp through the cooling season. Damp material plus warm air plus dust is exactly the recipe mold likes.

Unlike refrigerated AC, which pulls moisture out of the air, a swamp cooler puts moisture in. In a home that's already dealing with a leak or poor drainage, the cooler can tip conditions toward mold growth.

Signs your swamp cooler is the source

  • A musty smell that shows up or gets stronger when the cooler kicks on
  • The smell coming through the vents rather than from one room
  • Visible buildup, slime, or discoloration on the pads or in the reservoir
  • Higher-than-usual humidity indoors during cooling season
  • Allergy or respiratory symptoms that track with cooler use

How to prevent swamp cooler mold

  • Replace the pads on schedule. Old pads hold mineral buildup and stay damp. Change them at least at the start of each cooling season, more often with heavy use.
  • Clean the unit. Drain and clean the reservoir, remove sediment, and check for slime or scale. Do this at startup and periodically through the season.
  • Winterize it. At the end of the season, drain the unit fully, dry it out, and cover it. Standing water over the off-season is a mold and corrosion problem waiting to happen.
  • Watch your ductwork. If the ducts have stayed damp, the smell can persist even after you clean the unit. That's a sign to look deeper.
  • Don't over-run it. Running the cooler harder than you need adds unnecessary moisture to the house.

When it's beyond maintenance

Sometimes cleaning the unit doesn't fix the smell, which usually means moisture has gotten into the ductwork, the surrounding structure, or elsewhere in the home. If the musty odor sticks around after you've replaced pads and cleaned the cooler, or if anyone in the home is having symptoms, it's worth getting the air tested to find out what's actually circulating.
